THE FESTIVAL DINNER
- The Festival Dinner took place in the
Conference Suite at the University of Sussex
- As the guests arrived for the reception
the players were scurrying back to their rooms to dress and that
should be praised for their punctuality and smart attire on arrival
- The dining room looked resplendent
as Ron, House Manager and David, Catering Manager had ensured
that it would be.
- Melanie, who had made all of the arrangments
on behalf of the University remained quietly in the background
throughout the evening.
- Councillor David Smith and his wife
Mrs Pat Smith, Mayor and Mayoress of Brighton and Hove City Council
led the guests into the Dinning room.
- John Barclay ,President of the English
Schools' Cricket Association opened the proceedings

- Councillor Smith , in giving the loyal
toast, explained the derivation of the toast and went on to explain
how the three lions came about and the origins of the 6 martlets
on the Sussex tie.
- The martlets derive from castles- in
repsonse to the Mayor's question " Do you know the names
of the 6 Sussex Castles? - one wag was heard to respond Elephant
and Castle. The light hearted banter continued throughout the
evening. "How nice it was not to meet a boring Mayor"
- Hugh Morris, Deputy Chief Exective
of the ECB gave a stirring and very interesting talk drawing
on his experiences when playing for England.
- The Awards were made by David English
assisted by Ken Lake

the hole in the round of Golf
